Here’s an attempt to answer most of those questions. What follows is an attempt to provide accurate and current information along with personal opinions based on my own experience. THE UNOFFICIAL CZ SCORPION EVO 3 S1 FAQ.

So, what is this thing?

Here’s the manufacturer’s official site, but it’s basically the same as the CZ Scorpion Evo 3 A1 submachine gun without the folding stock and only available in semi-automatic to remain legal for importation in the United States as a pistol carbine. Chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum, the action is a simple direct blow-back design with a stationary 7.72″ barrel and non-reciprocating charging handle surrounded by a glass-reinforced polymer shell with an overall length of 16″.

It’s a light-recoiling, high-capacity 9mm carbine that’s easy to clean, fairly lightweight at 5 pounds, and has low cost of ownership compared with other weapons of its type (MSRP of $849, as opposed to the Sig MPX at $1378 MSRP, and magazines for less than $20 MSRP, again, as opposed to the MPX mags which are $55 each).

What is it really good for?

Asking what a gun is for is totally subjective, but many use them for home defense, range plinking, car/truck gun, and, thanks to the plentiful mounting rails, heavy-weight back scratchers. Basically, if you have to ask, it’s not for you.

What optics work best with it?

Low-mounted red dot sights work particularly well with this firearm, particularly if you want to co-witness with the factory sights (i. e., have them lined up together). As for what to get, a lot of people seem to think that the smaller and lighter it is, the better. Just remember: you get what you pay for.

Do your research and try to figure out what you want.

What weapon lights work with it?

Basically any of them that mount on picatinny rails will work. I use the Inforce WML, as I like how the shape matches the Scorpion…plus, the forward lens bezel looks a lot like the stock flash hider!

I would, however, have preferred a tighter focus and less flood than it has. In contrast, I have a cheap Nebo pistol light from Walmart whose spot characteristic is much more to my liking, even if I don’t particularly recommend it. I find it important because, in low-light situations, proper sighting is less critical, as bullets should pretty much go to the middle of the spot.

What about stock options?

What’s this about 922(r) compliance?

Per the Gun Control Act of 1968, 18 U. S.C. § 922(r), you can’t put together a semi-automatic rifle or shotgun that would have been banned from importation due to it containing a variety of components that are prohibited from importation. This is why the gun was imported in pistol configuration: so that it’d fall under the law.

CZ-USA is selling a factory stock along with a 922(r) compliance kit as a workaround for this issue. The first sets have shipped and sold out as of this writing (November 2015), with a second wave to come in the new year. Once back in stock these may be ordered through the CZ shop web site or any number of other retailers.

Are there variants of the Scorpion out there?

Although some arrived with the original designer logo on the receiver (Laugo), the only real differences involve some early models that came with sling rings on the left side sling point. That seems to have been limited to the earliest imports of the Scorpion.

However, the factory folding stocks come in first and second generation models. Clayton Harvey on the CZ Scorpion Enthusiasts FB forum was kind enough to post a comparison. Gen 1 is all polymer and locks in folded position, while the Gen 2 has an aluminum mount and uses a magnet to stay folded. The Gen 2 also has a rubber butt-pad, which may prevent flush folding.

Cluttery mess. Extra weight. Yeah maybe, if I’m fighting Isis in Iraq, and worried about batteries or hand grenades knockin my zero off. Good, informative article.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I prefer the factory irons to flippers because they’re shorter, have multiple easy-to-select apertures, have a small footprint, are as stout as can be, and come free with the gun. Putting an RDS on there is a simple matter, particularly with a QD amount like the ADM I use that raises it up where the sights are lower third co-witness rather than absolute. If there’s a problem, the RDS is gone at the flip of a lever, and you don’t even have to bother flipping the BUIS.

As for weight, a few ounces are meaningless to me…the difference between the factory sights and, say, Magpul’s poly BUIS, are negligible. As for clutter, the only way to avoid it is to ditch the irons completely or get some tiny minimalist flippers, which I’d rather just live without.

It comes down to personal preference (I could have just said like the Apple Jacks kids, “I shoot what I like!”), but I hope that explains my own rationale. Obrigado por seu comentário!

Just picked one up for $840 that came with a Kik blade kit. Threw on a Eotech and angled grip, and was able to hold an accurate 3 inch group at 50 meters. I love this gun.

I have had this weapon for a few years and fired it a lot, and has not jammed on me once. Very reliable weapon. I mounted a small green laser in front of the front sight. Small enough to not block the sight. The only issues I have with it is the selector lever digging into my finger when shooting, I wished the dark earth color was available and it is too long to store it in the gun lockers at the prison I work. This weapon is well built and very reliable.

The Scorpion is my favorite range gun. Compared with the HK SP5K, which costs almost $2,500, it is a great deal. Within the first two months after my purchase, I added an arm brace adapter, a replacement “duckbill” magazine release, a replacement charging handle, and an AK style right-side safety, the last three parts added due to design issues noted in YouTube videos. (KB Industries sells these parts.) Still debating whether to replace the trigger and trigger spring kit, and whether to convert it to an SBR.

Unfortunately I have had mine for over a year and I haven’t had time to shoot it. Its sitting on the top shelf of my gun safe just waiting on me to go to the gun range and try it out. I go to the range a lot but I am a range master for our sheriffs training range so even though I am out there a lot I am working shooting other peoples guns that I don’t have time to shoot my own guns. I am hoping to get out there during our Christmas break and it will be one of my first ones to shoot. I bought it because I think its very cool looking and I was very surprised it has very little plastic on it.

I want another one.

Just purchased mine today to replace my AR. AR is a great gun, but too much gun for home defense with its muzzle blast and excessive penetration. The scorpion in 9mm looks to be an excellent home defense platform. From all the good reviews it appears a good choice. Personal experience will tell.

Happy it came with several sling attachment options with my favorite the quick disconnect in the center of the back plate. Plenty rail space for optic and light/laser as well. SBR is a possibility.

Just got mine on 7/2/16 Love it but the scalpers are driving the prices up big time. Have been to an indoor range where I tested its accuracy which is excellent. Ordered several 30 round magazines for it and waiting on them to arrive. Will be using it in my truck as a carjacker deterant.

Got mine 10/2015, run around 1K rounds thru it so fair, not a single hiccup. Shoots the cheap FMJ stuff as well as good home defense hollow points just fine. Got my 922r kit for future Form 1, have the brace adapter for current use, a QD reflex dot sight, Viridian laser/light combo, and several 30 round mags. I have to say, this is one of the most fun to shoot guns I own, as well as one heck of a home defense piece. Compliments my similarly equipped KSG loaded up with 24+1 of the Aquilla shorty shells. Buy a Scorpion – you’ll never regret it.

I’ve had mine for about 6mo. Great fun to shoot put close to 800 rds through it. Changed out the safety lever on right side and put on reflex sight.

Buy this now now now. I bought the P07 and the P09 outstanding sidearms but, this one is the best “Fun Gun” Awesome CZ precision and quality. You can’t go wrong!

I love, love this gun. Only thing that would make this gun best ever if it came in a .40 & .45 and the safety selector were easier on the trigger finger.

Just put 100 rounds through. Good handling with just left hand shooting and right arm as rest. Lost right arm use in VN. Only thing I dislike is the safety. In the (fire position). It digs in to my finger. Lever turned up slightly on (fire) would help a lot. But, do like the safety being on both sides. Other an that, shoots very nice tight groups. Shot at 25m, 35m, 50m. Three shot groups were as good as Glock17. Very happy with Scorpon - other than safety.

Got my evo quite some time ago , was the first one my local shop got in . Great price for such a quality piece . Put 2000 rounds through it without a Single problem, fires cheap ammo as good as the good stuff . Picked up the arm brace, also filed the form 1 . Anyone that wants an all around gun this is it . Range toy, home protection, anything you want to do with it . The safety issue is no problem ,12.00 and you can replace it yourself in less than 5 min . 30 rounders are out and easy to get now also , they just make you put more lead down range 🙂 . Like to see an evo in 40 cal and 45 cal I could just imagine the sound of a 45 evo . Just something to think about …

Love my scorpion! Was never a 9mm fan, but I’m a changed man. The low recoil allows for super accurate rapid fire. I had issues with the right side safety as well. I gently cut the tab with some cutting pliers, and filed it smooth. Problem solved-

I finally got my cz evo 3 it a blast put 500 tounds in it first day out yes the safty sucked at first but this is cheap way to fix move you pointer finger up and use middle fingerto shoot very comfortable shoot just as fast and i think faster awsome gun going to go get another one for other hand.

Awsome gun. Very stable and reliable plaform for home defese, vehicle or any other place accuracy is important without rifle caliber. Does fill that gap for home defensse without the overkill of rifle rounds and sound it comes with.

I’ve owned this pistol for about 5 months now. Its a pleasure to shoot, even more so with a silencer. I use the Silencerco Octane 45 HD. Silencerco sells the adapter for it. However I’m still waiting for 30 round magazines to be available as well as the 922r kit to make this fun pistol in to an amazing Short barrel rifle. Toss on a solid red dot and have fun all day with this if you can keep up the ammo.

Picked up my new Scorpion and added a Vortex Venom Red Dot. Fired 400 rounds without fail yesterday. First 20 rounds dialed in the Venom at 50 yards then punched nice 2 inch holes in the center of targets. Easily controlled, my wife loved it and impressed those gathered around. SBR will be the next step.

I just got one for my seven year old son who has been shooting since he was 3. He was thrilled. Already fitted it with a Manticore flash suppressor, MOE AFG, ambi delete and a SIG brace. I can’t wait for my SBR. Now my boy isn’t as jealous of my Vector.

I “Absolutely Love” the EVO 3 S1 Scorpion. It’s the Hottest New firearm to hit the public market today. It shoots flawlessly. My only complaint is the safety on the right side. I have to order a safety delete because it digs into my big hand. This upgrade should be offered with the firearm in the box with the spare magazine & cleaning tool. Punchy.

All I know is that after reading about it for the past six months, I finally got my hands on one. Just hope it will bring back those MP5 memories.

Just got mine, I’m reporting about the same as everybody as to the quality of the gun and the dumb design of the ambi safety. Why why would CZ design the safety this way it just doesn’t make sense. That aside, I like it and I’m going to SBR the thing ASAP as this gun was made to be a small carbine not a pistol. Thanks CZ for another great gun…..

I just bought this new Scorpion EVO and I’m still in shock! it is the highest quality gun I’ve ever purchased. I own Uzi’s, Thompsons and AK-47’s as well as HK 93’s and 94’s but this Scorpion by far is light years ahead of them as far as being state of the art. The next generation will have to be a Star Trek Phaser as nothing else comes this high tech and state of the art! I am super pleased with it.

March 26, 2015 - Navarro This is my first sub-machine gun and I highly recommend it. I bought it locally and put three-hundred rounds through it the first day shooting it without any problems. It is well balanced minimal recoil and it’s a blast to shoot. There are a-lot of great one of a kind features about this gun that make it unique.

Great gun, for everyone that complains about the selector digging in there hand, they sell a new piece without the edge on that side in the online CZ shop only $12.95.

This thing is AWESOME! Only complaint is the ambi safety problem, which will be fixed with my dremmel. Outstanding accuracy from this platform, flawless function and portability is great. Now if I could talk CZ into coming up off about 10 of the 30 round magazines I’d be set.

Just got my EVO today it shoots great. fantastic feel and its way better than my h&k mp5… I very very pleased with this gun I’ve been waiting along time for this to release… thank you CZ usa for bring this home.

Great pistol! Fairly solid, and good bang for your buck. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that the ambi-safety digs in to my knuckle a little bit, but other than that, spot on!

Picked up my Evo last week. I purchased this with the sole intention of turning into an SBR. Form 1 is already filled out and getting mailed tomorrow. This is a perfect budget sub gun project. As far as the gun itself, it is very well-thought out, shoots great and priced right. I will say that the safety is absolutely awful and digs directly into your trigger finger. Hopefully CZ will have an upgrade very soon because it almost makes the gun painful to shoot if you are gripping the right way, high into the beavertail. Also, the trigger is pretty heavy. But otherwise this is a fantastic gun and will make a great subgun. I think everyone is waiting for CZ to start offering aftermarket stocks, preferably the A1 side folder…..

Got mine from the first batch in January. Adoro. Have already put CZ’s KAK buffer tube adapter on it with the Thordsen cover and enhanced saddle. Makes it a dream to shoot. My 13 year-old grandson picked right up on it. Not a single failure to fire or eject so far. Slipped the straight Hogue Handall finger grip over it and that gave a non-slip, padded surface to the thing and moved the hand slightly away from that pesky ambi safety switch for me. One of the favorites in my collection now. Thank you CZ. Great design and lots of fun. Need 30 round mags now.

Just got back from the range and all I can say is wow. Extremely fun gun to shoot. Only complaint is that the safety lever on the right side interferes with shooting the gun comfortably. The pointy part of the lever digs into your hand while shooting and can be quit painful. I hope CZ comes up with a fix for this, if not, I am sure some after market lever will be developed.

Received mine today and added a micro red dot site. Going to the range tomorrow to break it in. Can’t wait for CZ to release the stock so I can SBR this puppy.

Just picked mine up. This is a very neat looking gun. I, TOO wish for the thirty round magazines to be made available to us. My intention is to ” S. B.R. & # 8221; this gun, with a stock for it.

I have mine, and love it. The right side selector lever hits the finger, and will be modified, but overall this is one very fun gun! Gave me a few 1.5″ groups at the range on the first try, added a single point sling to it, can’t wait to get it back out to see how much better it gets. 🙂

Bought one for my wife (yeah…sure I did 😉 as a Valentines’ gift. She loves it! She is shooting it like a champ. I took it out and I have to say…that thing is pure awesome! I was an old MP5 guy back in the day..this is a huge improvement. put over 700 rounds through without a single failure…put 20 rounds into a 3 inch group at 15 shooting semi-rapid…Well built, fun as hell to shoot and easy to clean. Honestly, for the price, you have to put one in the collection!…

The ergonomics on the firearm is phenomenal, I am a huge fan of 9mm in small platforms like this JRC and highpoints are fun but nothing compares to this small 9mm platform. I am definitely a CZ fan and believer now.

I just picked mine up from my LGS. I am very impressed with this pistol. It is a legitimate successor to the MP5 and is probably the most perfect 9mm truck gun or SMG I have owned to date. Very lightweight and pointable, I found it a natural pistol to shoot well two handed without a stock. One I added an angled fore grip and red dot it was even better. It comes with lots of rail space, is completely ambidextrous and is very easy to take down and clean.

I was disappointed that it only came with 20 rounds mags when I know the 30 rounders are available overseas. Also the double sided safety selector digs into my rather large hands, but it is polymer so that will meet my Dremmel soon. Other than those two very minor complaints he only thing it needs is a stock. I will be filing my form 1 by the end of the week. Hopefully CZ can keep up with the demand!

Picked up the Evo 3 S1 on Friday from my favorite LGS and it’s a great firearm. Mine came with a 1:1 digital copy of the 5 shot grouping at 25meters showing the impacts compared to aim point which makes dialing it so much quicker/easier. I just filed a E-form 1 on it so I can eventually SBR it. I have a request in with my LGS for a couple more for my wife and I.

I’ve shot this in Slovakia in both civilian and military versions. EXTREMELY accurate even to 50 yards just with the base ‘iron sights’. Low kick. Pleasure to shoot. Can’t wait to buy 1 or 3 now that they are in the US!

Gun Review: CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 Pistol.

My favorite SMG of all time is the Škorpion vz. 61. It’s not the prettiest or the most powerful, but it’s an absolute joy to shoot and (much like the AR-15) is a bare-essentials kind of gun. Nothing was added that didn’t need to be there. When I heard that CZ was coming out with a new version of the Scorpion updated for 2015 I was extremely interested, and the instant one of our regular suppliers mentioned they had one in stock I was all over that like a fat kid on a Twinkie. Pistol caliber carbines are so hot right now, and if the Scorpion EVO 3 S1 lives up to the hype it could be a top contender for those looking for something to SBR . . .

The new Scorpion EVO 3 is very nearly a completely different beast from that original 1960s invention. The two firearms share a common operating system (direct gas blowback) and a common manufacturer…and that’s where the common features end. This new gun has been modernized in every way imaginable.

The predominant manufacturing material here is plastic, not metal. OK, the technical term is “fiber reinforced polymer,” but “plastic fantastic” just sounds better. The outer shell, trigger/magazine assembly, and grip are all made from high grade polymer instead of the stamped sheet metal and bakelite of yesteryear.

The barrel and trigger pack are still metal (cold hammer forged in the case of the barrel, which is actually impressive), as is the massive bolt that keeps this thing running, but every part that could be molded or cast in plastic has been. Normally I bemoan the presence of plastic in a firearm, but in this case it looks like they’ve done a remarkably good job with the design ensuring that the frame is strong enough for regular use, but light enough to be carried around.

Another major change is the addition of Picatinny rails over every inch of available space. There’s a full length top rail for mounting optics or sling accessories, and while the handguard is a separate molding from the receiver, the top rail flows seamlessly from one to the next. At the front and back of that rail are some custom low-profile rail mounted sights, which are actually pretty nice and easy to use.

The adjustments on the rear are simple and firm, and the front sight works like any other AR-15 or AK-47 in the world. The gun also ships with a hand stop at the end of the bottom rail to keep shooters from putting their hand too close to the business end of the firearm, which is definitely an appreciated addition.

Speaking of appreciated additions, there’s an MP5-style charging handle setup on the gun. As on the MP5, the charging handle is not permanently attached to the bolt, allowing the gun to cycle without the charging handle moving at all. There’s also a similar cutout at the rear of the charging handle’s travel allowing the shooter to park the charging handle for unloading the gun or malfunction drills. Slapping it downwards releases the bolt in a satisfying 80’s action movie kind of way.

Since the “charging handle” on the old Scorpion was little more than a pair of ridged nubs on either side of the gun, the updated version definitely improves the operation. I’d complain that the charging handle is only on one side, but at the push of a pin you can easily swap it from one side to the other.

Out front, the barrel comes threaded from the factory. In states that still fully observe civil liberties and individual freedoms you’ll be able to remove the muzzle device on the front of the gun and substitute whatever muzzle device you choose, from an obnoxious brake to a polite and effective suppressor. Well, you could, if anything in the United States was threaded 18x1mm RH. The more common thread pitch for 9mm stuff is 1/2×28 inches (as on an AR-15) or even 5/8×24 (like the AR-10) but alas the Scropion’s is neither.

That means you’ll need a custom adapter to mount your can of choice. Liberty Suppressors has apparently already worked one up for this gun. The barrel length on the gun is a touch over 7 inches, meaning that the 9mm bullet will be traveling a little quicker than from your GLOCK 19 and the gas pressure at the muzzle should be slightly reduced due to the longer dwell time. Whether this will actually make the gun quieter is yet to be seen, especially with that chunky metal operating system.

Moving a little further back on the gun we arrive that the fire controls. There’s definitely some more MP5 influence here, specifically in the shape of the safety selector switch. The magazine release is a very European design, too, as it’s integrated into the trigger guard. The inclusion of some ergonomic shaping around the release as well as some ridges make it relatively easy to use and easy to hit. Coming from the more traditional button-based release on other guns there is a learning curve to using the device properly, but it works pretty well as engineered. As with all magazine releases of this type I always worry a bit about a finger slipping onto the trigger accidentally, though.

The bolt release may be secondary (the charging handle works perfectly well in this role), but it’s massive. Compared to an AR-15 paddle this is about three times the size. The difference is that with an AR-15 you push the button to release the bolt, and here you are pulling down on the tab instead. This keeps the profile of the gun slimmer (since there’s nothing sticking out from the side), but might be hard to use in an emergency as that pulling motion is more complex than a simple paddle press. Then again, that’s what the charging handle is for.

The grip is a little on the small side for me, but admittedly I have massive hands. At the moment there’s only one grip available for the gun, but given that it’s extremely easy to swap out (there’s one readily accessible bolt holding it in place) I’m betting that replacement grips will be available sometime in the future.

Installed from the factory on the left side of the gun is a sling loop. There are a couple alternate locations on the gun to mount this loop if that location doesn’t meet standards, or there’s an entire top rail to use if you want to go that route. Either way, weapons retention is definitely something that CZ thought about and included in their design from the beginning.

The last major change is the magazine. The EVO 3 uses its own proprietary mags. Isso é tanto benção quanto maldição. The magazines seem to reliably feed into the gun and are definitely pretty to look at, but since there’s currently so little demand for them I wouldn’t hold my breath for replacement magazines being easy to find (or reasonably priced) for quite some time.

As a small aside about the magazines, they’re the reason that there are no stock kits currently available from CZ. Jeremy S. appears to have gotten his hands on something similar, but CZ is holding off on providing any to the market. The problem is that pesky 922(r) compliance issue — since the pistol is made overseas by the CZ mothership and imported, adding a stock to the gun might make it illegal to own as an “imported evil assault rifle.”

Word is that CZ is waiting on an American manufacturer to start putting out American-made magazines so that the gun can be 922(r) compliant before they release any stocks, which is a pretty responsible thing to do actually. It would be better if they made a couple parts in the USA to begin with, but this is only the first production run after all. MSRP on supplemental factory 30 round magazines is rumored to be $19.95, BTW.

Taking the gun apart is actually not too bad. As Jeremy shows, there’s not much to it. As a note, Jeremy’s gun came with a stock adapter in the box as well as a buffer tube, but I got no such present in my box (Jeremy got his directly from CZ, I got ours from our friends at Kentucky Gun Co.). Apparently the plan is for CZ to sell the buffer tube and adapter separately in the future, but Jeremy got the added special sauce in the box for asking nicely.

What’s particularly notable from this video is how simple the disassembly process is — no non-captured bolts or springs to worry about, and very few parts to lose on the kitchen counter. High marks for ease of use, but with the grip still attached it might be tough to get into all the nooks and crannies of the gun for cleaning.

Speaking of stock kits, the rear plate is laughably easy to remove. The design is similar to a SCAR stock, but there’s a button in the center of the plate that needs to be depressed for it to slide free of the gun. It looks like a hex screw when you shine a light on it, but trust me it’s just a detent you need to push down to slide the plate off.

Out on the range, the gun feels pretty good. The plastic shell is somewhat slick, but there’s enough grip to make me happy that it isn’t going to fly out of my hand. The forward hand stop is definitely a helpful addition. It not only makes holding the gun with two hands easier and more comfortable, but also makes it easy to hook onto barricades and such for stability. Even holding it with one hand, the gun balances well and doesn’t feel uncomfortable to hold.

Until you flip off the safety.

The safety selector switch on this gun is ambidextrous, meaning that the large paddle that allows your thumb to depress it on one side is also present on the other. The design is basically identical to the old MP5 safety, except that on the MP5 the selector is mounted far above the shooter’s hand. With the safety position on the EVO 3, when the safety is flipped to the “off” position, the paddle digs into the trigger finger of your shooting hand. And when you fire the gun, that paddle is hammered into your flesh and beats on your bone.

I have to be honest here, this design feature made the gun physically painful to fire. I thought I might be doing something wrong so I consulted the manual, but there was nothing in there regarding my situation. I get the feeling that this is a result of actually using the gun as a pistol when it was designed as an SBR/SMG with the expectation that it would have a stock.

Without the stock all the weight from the back of the pistol is supported by your firing hand. Consequently all of that recoil is transmitted to that hand (and directly into your finger). With a stock, this shouldn’t be an issue, but as a pistol this is a huge problem. It made me stop shooting after two magazines because it hurt so much. I asked a couple other people at the range to try the gun and they all reported the same thing.

My recommendation for those who want to buy this gun: judicious application of a Dremel tool. There aren’t any replacement safety selectors available yet, and you’ll want to shave yours down until an alternate is available.

On the bright side, recoil is pretty tame and controllable, but I confess I was focusing more on the sharp pain in my trigger finger at the time.

Accuracy is acceptable. Shooting this gun as a pistol is decidedly harder than it looks, but once you get a stock on this puppy it should be accurate enough for a PDW.

The problem with this version of the Scorpion is that it’s being sold as a pistol. The gun was designed to use a stock, and while it can legally be sold as a pistol it should probably only ever be sold as a do-it-yourself SBR kit. The ergonomics make a lot more sense as a rifle or SBR, and certain painful design features can be avoided when using it as the original designers intended.

I applaud CZ for shipping it as a pistol so that we can enjoy it while waiting for our Form 1 to come back, but that’s not the definitive form of this gun. This Scorpion needs a stock to work properly, and with a stock this would be a rocking awesome PDW or pistol caliber carbine. Without a stock, it desperately needs a different safety lever.

The pain keeps small groups from appearing. Plus, as a pistol the thing is a bit awkward and chunky to hold.

I can’t remember another firearm I’ve tested that has inflicted physical pain on me as I was shooting it. Even the Armalite AR-50 was a pleasure to shoot as long as you were behind it and not to the side. That can all be fixed on the Scorpion with a stock, though.

No issues. Hundreds of painful rounds later with no cleaning in the Texas dust and she still works like a Swiss clock. Or Czech. Como queiras.

Swapping the butt plate for a stock adapter is dead simple. The rails all over the gun make it easy to attach whatever you want, from a red dot to a Mr. Coffee. The only issue is the thread pitch on the barrel, which means no commercially available silencer will fit on it.

Deixe-me colocar isso em perspectiva. For $50 more than MSRP, you can buy an Uzi pistol that has none of the ergonomic problems and comes in a smaller package. If you’re looking for a high capacity direct blowback 9mm, that’s your ticket. But if you’re looking to SBR this gun, then you’ve chosen wisely — the POF MP5 clones are massively more expensive. The SIG SAUER MPX still hasn’t hit store shelves, but will apparently be priced about twice as much. And while MasterPiece Arms is getting on the right track, their MAC-10 like pistols just aren’t my speed. Keep in mind that we review guns based on how they come from the factory, not based on how they could possibly be configured.

Looks like a fun range toy.

However, speaking only for myself (and specifically not my wife), if I’m going to drop a kilobuck on a range toy it will likely be a Roger Rabbit gun, aka a 460 S&W as reviewed a few days back.

OTOH if the Skorpion came chambered in 45ACP said wife might get one for herself…

I know a lot of folks shy away from NFA items for home defense purposes, but with a stock and a suppressor I think this is a great choice for HD. 30 rounds (when the $19.95, 30-round mags become available… 20 rnds now) of 147 grn HST in a stable, easy-to-shoot, maneuverable platform that allows for the mounting of an optic and other gadgets and is hearing safe to shoot inside…

But it ain’t so bad as a range toy and 9mm is still one of the least expensive centerfire cartridges to enjoy in a range toy.

Yeah, but then you have the legal issues to contend with. Unfortunately, HD firearm choice needs to be at least partially influenced by the fact that you WILL be charged with murder (unless you live in Colorado, where out Castle Doctrine specifically states that we are completely IMMUNE from prosecution if we use deadly force in our own homes). If you shot the scumbag with a simple 12 gauge pump, well, that’s a very politically correct option. On the other hand, use a suppressed SBR (and I agree, that is probably the best option for HD), and the prosecution will bring in “experts” to testify that it is a “military special operations weapon” and use that to paint you as a crazy vigilante who wanted nothing more than to kill someone.

I understand that a lot of folks feel this way, I just disagree entirely. Especially with your assertion right off the bat that you “WILL be charged with murder.” That is just patently not the case at all. Not in any state, let alone the vast majority of them with versions of castle doctrines.

I don’t understand all the assassin/operator **** that gunners fret about, when NFA items are brought up for HD use. Seems kinda FUDDish to me.

Do we have any documented cases where this happened? Even here in Illinois, castle doctrine still applies.

Uhhhh no. Please provide a documented case that a DGU with a suppressor prompted the DA to apply a harsher charge. I could see the defense lawyer demanding that the jury be subjected to a test firing (without ear protection) of the un-supressed and suppressed rifle in an enclosed 10×10 room and then asking the jury which they preferred.

What makes you believe that Colorado is unique in that regard? Here’s what we have in Washington, for example:

Defending against violent crime — Reimbursement.

(1) No person in the state shall be placed in legal jeopardy of any kind whatsoever for protecting by any reasonable means necessary, himself or herself, his or her family, or his or her real or personal property, or for coming to the aid of another who is in imminent danger of or the victim of assault, robbery, kidnapping, arson, burglary, rape, murder, or any other violent crime as defined in RCW 9.94A.030.

(2) When a person charged with a crime listed in subsection (1) of this section is found not guilty by reason of self-defense, the state of Washington shall reimburse the defendant for all reasonable costs, including loss of time, legal fees incurred, and other expenses involved in his or her defense. This reimbursement is not an independent cause of action. To award these reasonable costs the trier of fact must find that the defendant’s claim of self-defense was sustained by a preponderance of the evidence. If the trier of fact makes a determination of self-defense, the judge shall determine the amount of the award.

I agree; I do feel an AR is better, but that’s if you don’t have a hard time using an AR because of the extra weight (2-3 pounds more and spread out over a wide area instead of in a tight little package) or location of the controls (particularly the charging handle) like a lot of women and older people might.

I have a small house with narrow hallways. A full-size AR is entirely too large to maneuver around in such tight spaces. I’m not alone in this, either. It’s why I use a pistol for home defense–it might not be the most effective weapon, but it’s the least unwieldy choice available to me. Better to have a less effective weapon I can point and aim than a better one that I can’t.

Fire a 5.56 inside without ear pro, suppressed or not, and you’ll wish you hadn’t. Well, suppressed you’ll wish you hadn’t and not suppressed you’ll be deaf. A suppressed AR in subsonic .300 BLK would be different. But I’d still want it short (whether that meant SBR or integrally-suppressed barrel that hit 16″ in length). And .300 BLK subsonic can be a great round with the proper projectiles but I think I actually lean towards 9mm or .45 ACP for indoor use instead, if for no other reason than I think a simple blowback action like the Scorpion’s is quieter and more reliable than a direct gas impingement .300 BLK AR…

Give me ear protection and a short rifle (e. g. the Tavor or an SBR) and, sure, I’d rather have a 5.56 in my hand were it needed to save my life than a pistol caliber. And my Tavor has lived in the HD firearm spot (with suppressor) sometimes.

Good points but our HD needs are already filled, so this would for us be a range toy.

Re avoiding NFA items in general, you can’t deny it is a hassle. And for suppressors at least, it feels like I’d be a generation or two behind by the time my tax stamp comes through. Maybe I’ve been too iPhoned for my own good, though.

As a home defense gun, this doesn’t do anything a KelTec Sub2000 doesn’t do. For 1/4 the price, once you SBR it.

I’m not saying Its not worth the premium. But for a HD gun, I tend towards effective and cheap. The KelTec I used to own was 100% reliable, and with a 30 round Glock mag, carried a lot of firepower. I sold my $275 KelTec on GB in 2013 auction prices crept over $800. Now I’m waiting for the Gen 2 version I saw at SHOT. It fixes most of the problems with the gun.

With that said, I fully intend to purchase a Scorpion and a Sig MPx sometime soon, compare them and keep whichever I like more. I see these guns more as a competitor to a SBR AR15 in 9mm.

The KelTec will remain just about the best truck and HD carbine out there.

Oh hey sorry to jump in here, but as I was just taking a bit of a breakfast break and saw your comment I figured I’d reply RE what I did on my Form 1 for the Scorpion Evo 3 S1…

I decided on what AR-15 buttstock I want on it (U. S.-made, just in case) and calculated the overall length of the Scorpion with the stock adapter seen here and that AR stock on it, and that’s what went on my Form 1. If, down the road, CZ is able to sell the actual Scorpion Evo stock, either due to making it in the U. S. or getting approval from the ATF or whatever, I may consider switching to it. It definitely looks good on the Evo. Or, I’m guessing the aftermarket will come out with a slick folding stock adapter for the Evo and I may stick with the AR buttstock I chose (and love) and swap the mount so it can fold.

I think the Evo has 12 key parts that are foreign-made when the ATF requires a maximum of 10 for 922r compliance. IF full compliance of turning this pistol into an SBR is necessary. I’m just going to assume it is to be safe. Swapping the magazine baseplate and follower would get you to the 10 maximum. Swapping the pistol grip to something U. S.-made would take you to 9 so you’ve got a little fudge factor. If a U. S. company makes complete magazines then you’re down even further on the number. So here’s to hoping we’ll be able to purchase U. S.-made magazines and a U. S. made pistol grip. Magpul, you out there. 🙂

A US made trigger pack would work as well. We will probably see that before US made mags.

I wouldn’t be surprised though if in the next few years, CZ-USA starts making some of the parts here in the US so they can sell a carbine version.

It’s my understanding that CZ-USA doesn’t have production/manufacturing capabilities other than Dan Wesson’s. Unless the volume of Scorpions, Brens, and other rifles CZ wants to start selling in the U. S. looks like it’s going to be high enough to justify the massive expense of tooling up a manufacturing facility, my guess is they’ll contract other companies to make these sorts of parts in the U. S. to CZ’s specs and with CZ’s name on them. Lots of the companies we know and love will white label in this way. As an example of the actual manufacturing way to do it, I *believe* IWI US ramped up its own production facilities to manufacture the necessary number of items in the U. S. to make the Tavor 922r compliant.

With CZ-USA manufacturing and branding its own firearm for the first time ever, though, (the 1911 A1) it has certainly taken a step in the direction of making its own products.

…and yeah, a U. S.-made trigger group would go a long way towards compliance since trigger housing, trigger, hammer, sear, and disconnector are all listed separately as 922r items and each one counts towards your 10…

Jeremy, what length did you put for the OAL on your form 1? My Scorpion got on a UPS truck this morning, so I’ll be e-filing my form 1 next Monday night. I have an AR-15 carbine length tube and MOE+ on the way as well.

I’d say just don’t buy the buffer tube adapter from CZ until your Form 1 comes in. Just in case, RE constructive possession.

Honestly, I’d rather not share the OAL I put in. I’m not using the stock that you’re planning on using and my “measurement” is only an educated guess based on measuring the mount adapter and knowing the actual dimensions of the stock I’m using (which includes its own buffer tube), etc. I don’t want to risk anybody plugging in the same OAL that I used and it being incorrect. I’d be happy to take measurements for you, though, and I’ll go ahead and put measurements for the buffer tube adapter in my review. CZ lists OAL for the S1 and I’ll do what I can to confirm or “update” that measurement with the rear plate adapter and the flash hider off of the pistol (since removable muzzle devices don’t count on the NFA stuff and the rear mount will be replaced with a different one when it’s SBR’d).

If you send the trigger pack to a company and they do work on it to improve the action does it change the classification to US made. I’d assume that the answer is NO.

I hear some common complaints for the handgrip angle…seems like an easy place to rack up a US made part count.

In the end, if you can get there with an improved made-from-scratch US trigger upgrade that would seem to solve the heavy trigger issue as well as the 922R business.

You know someone is going to make a trigger upgrade because the potential sales will probably be a lot higher for this than a Tavor especially if it clears up the 922R issue.

Jeremy did the first look article and filed paperwork for his pistol.

Do you think your hand size might be a factor in the gun being painful? Did sliding the grip help? I saw that it can be moved backward.

For the price, even as a pistol, this looks like a pretty nice option for home defense and fun at the range. Shame about the finger biting.

BTW can I just say this is what got me reading TTAG in the first place. I have now watched a handful of YouTube reviews and read a few internet reviews on the Scorpion Evo and so far none of them mentioned the right side safety lever issue. There’s no freaking way they didn’t experience what Nick did.

It’s nearly impossible to have your finger on the trigger without the safety jabbing into it. I experimented on mine with the grip moved through its entire range of front-rear travel as well as during a horrifying and illegal dream in which I shouldered the SB15 brace to see if that made a difference, and it actually did help but only a tiny bit. Mine will be receiving the Dremel treatment after I do the “before” photos. Não há como contorná-lo.

I only started getting into shooting a couple years ago, and it took me a while to realize the “respectable” dead tree gun mags were basically press releases from gun manufacturers. Even when I disagree with a writer here (which happens often enough), at least I can be certain it’s an honest disagreement.

Yep that’s what I heard also. You can imagine that this is as simple as taking the unused lever to a flat belt sander to the point that it is nothing but a flat disc.

It’s very easy to remove the one on the right side. But, it is needed to hold the safety bar in the frame so it would have to be replaced with something else for sure. Including a Dremeled-down version of itself 😉

I’m paying $200 so if a cop sees me shooting a pistol from the shoulder, he can’t arrest me for having an unregistered SBR. Here in WA, it’s a state felony (as well as a federal one) to possess an unregistered SBR, so if a local cop at a gun range sees me using it in a way the ATF now considers an SBR, he can arrest me. And a cop observing me doing something potentially illegal would be enough probable cause for a court to uphold checking my serial number with the ATF, so the 4th Amendment doesn’t apply.

And no, I have no desire to be a test case.

What he’s referring to is that, if you are in possession of an NFA item, ATF can demand entrance to the place where you store it (i. e. your home) at any time, without a warrant, to ensure that you’re compliant with everything.

The ATF can show up to my home and demand to inspect an NFA item, and, legally, I must comply.

That’s precisely the point. They cannot search it without you, but if you’re there they can demand entry without any warrant, and you have no recourse. So you do lose a large chunk of your constitutional protections.

This is completely false! These are totally unfounded rumors. The ATF can randomly inspect FFLs during stated business hours at the FFL’s premises. They cannot and will not show up at your home to inspect your NFA items. Sempre. I suppose legally they could call you and ask if you wouldn’t mind letting them swing by and inspect your stuff and buy your wife dinner, but they cannot enter your home without a warrant. I don’t see an AR grip adapter as being possible. But aftermarket grips will be easy. Sold separately. I think it’s going to come in in the range of $80, which includes the adapter and the KAK buffer tube.

One of my favorite firearm configurations is the camp carbine. I missed my chance to get an HK-94A3, but I did pick up an Uzi rifle (I hate the stock!). I also have an old Inland M1 Carbine with a Federal Ordnance under-folder on it that’s about perfect except for the oddball caliber.

I like CZ, and if they were to offer the EVO 3 as a 16″ folding carbine I’d pick one up in a heartbeat.

As a lefty, i dont see a problem with that giant paddle.

As far as a muzzle device goes, Witt machine does everything to customer spec. It’s not hard to program a CNC lathe to cut a metric thread, I can do that all day long.

I would love to have one of these if I was able to install a folding/collapsible stock absent having to file more paperwork than an “illegal alien” must when entering Country (actually that’s not a good comparison as one of the aforementioned requires NO PAPERWORK and just a hint it ain’t the SBR/NFA stuff ;)…

Now concerning what type of weapon is used in a HD deployment situation, I too hear all of the countless “warnings” about using that “scary” looking firearm be it a Vepr-12 instead of a traditional Pump etc. I and also have yet to see a single documented case where the homeowner were found to be guilty of that dreaded “RamboIsm” and, therefore, scheduled to Extra time…

I just shot my son’s CZ and he put a new safety on it that easily flicks up and completely out of the way with your trigger finger. You’d love it.

The shittyness of the trigger ruins this gun. Its one of the worst triggers ive ever shot. And overall the gun has to many flaws. Horrible as a pistol. Uncomfortable to shoot. Way more recoil than ita peers. And picatiny rails really very uncomfortable on hands without gloves. Grip angle just too agressive also. Even in sbr. Sure, it looks cool. But that doesnt always transfer over to it actuallu being a great design. Im glad i passed on this. Even at 800 bucks.

I’m very disappointed in this gun and CZ. The top rail broke off a 2 teeth section on the right side (serial number side), called CZ and they said sorry, we can’t help you. This gun was purchased 6/3/2016, so it’s just over a month old. I’m not sure how it broke but in my opinion, a month old gun should not be breaking anywhere and a manufacturer should definitely be standing behind their product. This is marketed as a rugged firearm, obviously not! I own several CZ products and this experience is making me rethink ownership. I have had 2 other issues with firearms, Sig Sauer and FN. Both of those companies were great and took care of my issue right away. Beware of CZ products, CZ will not stand behind it! There are several other posts just like mine from bad customer service experiences. Oh yeah, the trigger is horrible.

I have owned the Scorpion for almost 2 years and over 2000 rds down the barrel and the firearm is definitely in my top 3 in my vault. Only complaint I have are these damn mags, out of 20 30-rd mags 9 of them have broken feed lips. The funny part is they don’t break while in use and they don’t break when you mag drop them on the ground at the range they break loaded in the damn vault. The simple fact that the feed lips crack under pressure of being loaded, when I discovered this I loaded one 30-rd mag with 28 rds in it and it took 3 months until a stress crack appeared. Mind you CZ took care of the mags but really where is the quality? If I didn’t spend the extra money and time to SBR it I would’ve tossed it to the waste side but I love this platform so much I can’t let her go. It’s sorta like trying to get rid of a cheating wife that you love…P. S. I can’t wait to suppress this beast!!

CZ-USA Announces Scorpion Folding Stock & 922r Compliance Kit.

CZ’s Scorpion Evo S1 Pistol is proving to be a hot item. At an MSRP of an affordable $849 and with tons of potential, it’s easy to see why. I say “potential,” because the shootability of a large “pistol” like this — like an AR pistol, like a SIG MPX pistol, etc. — is less than ideal. They tend to be clunky and awkward but, of course, this is because they were designed to have a shoulder stock. Regardless of barrel length, they were made to be used like rifles and are only sold in pistol form to avoid NFA “short barreled rifle” regulation and/or to avoid 922(r) compliance requirements as discussed in detail earlier today. On the factory folding stock and 922(r) front, though, CZ-USA has just released the following bit of great news at the NRA Annual Meetings in Nashville. . .

Scorpion Factory Stock to be Made Available This Summer.

Since the release of the CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 Pistol in October of 2014, CZ-USA has received many inquiries about the availability of the factory folding stock. It has always been CZ-USA’s intention to make the stock available to the public as soon as practicable.

Obviously, an approved Form 1 is required to convert the CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 Pistol into an SBR. The ATF has informed us that 922r does apply, and their official parts count for the Scorpion Pistol is 16 parts. CZ-USA is currently in the process of manufacturing a number of US-made parts which we intend to sell both individually and as part of a kit to ensure that individuals manufacturing SBRs have the means to comply with 922r.

We’re also working closely with a number of US manufacturers to ensure a variety of US-made parts are available from sources other than CZ-USA. That being said, until more qualifying 922r compliance parts are available from aftermarket sources, the factory stock will only be available as part of the kit including the required compliance parts.

We expect to begin selling the stocks as part of a 922r compliance kit in late summer (earlier if at all possible).

Retail cost of the compliance kit will be very reasonable, ensuring that a CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 SBR will remain one of the most reasonably priced pistol-caliber carbines available to the public.

Although I’m very happy with the ACE M4 SOCOM stock on my Scorpion, I’ll probably switch to the factory folding unit and move the SOCOM to an AR. At any rate, the rest of the compliance kit can’t come soon enough, as my SBR is currently a trigger group-less paperweight until it can become 922(r) compliant!

Hopefully we’ll see a factory SBR offered from them as well.

That’d be cool. I’d say the main advantage to taking a pistol and filing a Form 1 to turn it into an SBR is that you have the pistol to use during the entire time you’re waiting on the Form 1 approval. If you buy a factory SBR, you have to pay for the firearm and it stays in your FFL’s possession until the Form 4 is approved (right now running about 90 days, which is super fast compared to the average over the last few years). That’s assuming the FFL had it in stock and you didn’t have to purchase it from another dealer and then wait a few weeks for the dealer-to-dealer transfer to happen first, then file the Form 4.

On the plus side, you don’t have to add any engraving to it if you buy it in factory configuration (since the manufacturer already engraved their info). If you do a Form 1 to build it, like I did with my Scorpion, you have to put your info on it. In the case of doing it under a trust, the name of the trust, city in which the trust is located, and state (2-letter state abbreviation is okay [this is an instance where spelling “okay” “OK” would have been very confusing haha]) have to be engraved on it.

Also, the e-file form 1 is still running over a month faster than a paper form 4, although it is slowing.

My AR form 1 in December took 34 days. My Scorpion form 4 from mid-February is at 57 days and still pending, but the average is 60 right now.

Did you ask ATF about 922(r)? An SBR is not a Rifle. A Rifle is a title 1 weapon. Also when you submit a form 1 you become the manufacture of a new weapon(an SBR). Therefore the weapon was not made by CZ.

I also am not a lawyer. But, it looks pretty clear that this act does not apply to NFA weapons.

I think it’ll happen. The Scorpion is certainly popular enough. It will still be subject to 922(r), though, but hopefully by that point CZ-USA is simply importing them with certain parts missing and finishing the assembly in the U. S. with domestic parts so the numbers work out.

The optic yes – but look at the mount. The CZ image has a 4 bolt mount to the optic itself… nothing I’m able to find online. I wouldn’t put it past ANY company to use knock-off parts for advertisements, however.

Mystery solved – TA26 which was discontinued for 2015. I guess they’re dropping all the “Special Ring Mount” models.

My Scorpion form 1 should be back soon. I am of course going to remove parts to make sure it stays 922r compliant. 😉

No, it does not. Assembling it in the U. S. has nothing to do with how many imported parts are on it. If you build an AK from a bare receiver (or a sheet metal flat, for that matter), you’re still subject to 922(r) and can only have 10 imported parts from the list of 20 on the final product.

And there are other opinion letters from the ATF (do some Google Searching) that is a contradiction to this ruling. Are we surprised?

It isn’t really a contradiction. It’s per firearm. 922(r) only applies if the firearm is banned for importation because it doesn’t meet the “sporting purposes” exemption. So an imported firearm that met that requirement is fine to have whatever number of imported parts on it because it’s exempt from 922(r). A firearm that is “nonsporting” must comply. Whether it’s an NFA item or not has nothing to do with it at all. It’s a semi-auto rifle or it’s a shotgun whether NFA or not. The ATF will rule on each individual firearm model separately because it rightly is a case-by-case basis. Saying one gun isn’t 922(r) applicable and another is applicable is not a conflict and it isn’t contradicting past rulings, etc etc.

Serious question about the terminal ballistics of pistol caliber carbines:

Which caliber would provide the best odds of immediately stopping a motivated attacker with one shot at ranges under 25 yards? I know, we are talking about “pistol” calibers which are “anemic”. We are also talking about barrels that could be 16.1+ inches which could greatly increase muzzle velocity and hence “stopping power”.

I am rapidly converging on the idea of .40 S&W shooting 135 grain hollowpoint bullets at something like 1600 fps or 10mm shooting 135 grain hollowpoint bullets at something like 1900 fps.

Impossible to answer. But it should be stated that standard weight 9mm ammo and standard weight .45 ACP ammo actually don’t gain much velocity at all in a 16″ bbl vs your standard.

4.7″ pistol bbl. Pistol ammo is designed to burn all its powder and come up to full velocity within a full-sized pistol’s barrel. Some calibers do see significant gains, like 10mm and .40 S&W does as well or light-for-caliber projectiles tend to gain velocity in longer barrels in any caliber. Sure, you could also custom load with slower-burning powder to really get the most of it. ballisticsbytheinch/ has data for basically all calibers shot out of a huge range of barrel lengths.

People like to over think.

Go take a look at shootingthebull ammo reviews for 147gr HSt 9mm and see if that might tend to discourage someone from being motivated. In addition that 147gr will be subsonic.

Some times the best answer is easy.

That’s what will be in my Scorp when it’s running. 30 rounds of 147 grain standard pressure HST. BTW it’s right freakin’ on the cusp of subsonic and supersonic through the Scorp so, depending on the temperature, it will break the sound barrier sometimes.

I have a bunch of 9mm ammo here, including like 7 popular hollow point brands, so I’m likely going to do some chronograph testing to show what the velocities are through the Scorpion’s 7.72″ bbl.

I considered high-quality 9mm 147 grain hollowpoints and with a muzzle velocity of just over 1000 fps out of a 16 inch barrel, I am not all that confident that one shot is going to immediately incapacitate a motivated (e. g. suicide) attacker.

It seems to me like a high-quality .40 caliber 135 grain hollowpoint bullet at 1600 or 1900 fps (from .40 S&W and 10mm respectively) would have to be much more likely to stop someone right away. That 135 grain bullet at 1600 fps has 767 foot-pounds of energy and at 1900 fps has 1082 foot-pounds of energy … versus 359 foot-pounds of energy from the 9mm 147 grain bullet.

In other words I picture the 9mm bullet creating a hole and the 10mm bullet creating an explosion in the attacker’s torso. It also seems like the 10mm is much more likely to cause hydrostatic shock for instantaneous “lights out”.

I don’t really understand. Why limit yourself to pistol caliber then? Everything is a compromise. I choose 9mm because I want the capacity and I want subsonic for suppressed use. What’s the point in going with the most powerful pistol-caliber carbine you possibly can if the limitation of pistol caliber is an ‘artificial’ choice you’re making in the first place? Shoot a .308 carbine.

At any rate, you could do a pistol caliber carbine in .460 Rowland or in other calibers more powerful than 10mm anyway. So why choose 10mm? Every choice is a compromise over another caliber that’s bigger and stronger. It plays out all the time… .380 sucks, carry 9mm; 9mm sucks, carry .45; .45 sucks, carry 10mm; 10mm sucks, carry .44 magnum; .44 mag sucks, carry 5.56; 5.56 sucks, carry .308… ad nauseam.

If you want these kinds of effects in an SBR, just get one in .300 BLK.

Not as good as an SBR in .308, .458 SOCOM, .50 Beowulf, etc etc etc…

I was initially thinking along three lines:

(1) Keep ammunition cost down.

(2) Keep the report (blast) relatively low without a suppressor.

(3) Keep recoil low.

While 5.56 x 45mm NATO and 7.62 x 39mm ammunition satisfy the low cost objective and to a decent extent the low recoil objective, they will be much louder than .40 S&W in a 16 inch barrel without a suppressor. I have shot .40 S&W out of a 16 inch barrel without any suppressor and it is amazingly “quiet” compared to the blast out of a 4 inch barrel. (It is still loud of course and you would want to wear hearing protection when practicing.) I have also heard someone shoot .45 ACP out of a Baretta CX4 Storm without any suppressor and it seemed even quieter than the .40 S&W.

I am trying to stay away from suppressors because they are expensive, require ATF blessing to purchase and transport, decrease the maneuverability of a firearm, and represent a unnecessary component that can fail and degrade firearm function.

.45 ACP is pretty low pressure compared to the majority of other modern pistol rounds (9mm, .40, 10mm, .357 sig, etc), and the heavy, slow bullets give the powder plenty of time to completely burn. In a 16″ bbl without suppressor, it’s quite likely to be the quietest by a decent margin.

No permission is needed to transport a suppressor. If it’s legal where you’re headed, it’s legal to move it around. Most NFA items that actually shoot projectiles do need permission (form 5320.20) to bring across state lines, though.

I just got my brace tube last week because I liked the idea of less regulations related to traveling with a pistol versus an SBR.

No idea. I think the BREN and Scorpion would be popular enough to justify it, though. CZ-USA does own Dan Wesson, which has manufacturing capabilities. They’d have to expand it, but I’d think that would be the “easy” route (move DW to a larger location and expand its machinery, staff, and capabilities so it can produce parts/firearms for CZ-USA).

Hey Jeremy. Can you explain to me why your EVO doesn’t have a trigger group at the moment? Estou confuso. Multiple people have claimed to have their Form 1 approved for a EVO 3.

That could even be the base of a legal defense in the oddball chance someone received a 922r stand alone charge (which has never ever happened apparently). Almost all 922r charges you see via Google are add-on charges to more serious stuff, like having an unregistered SBR for example.

Maybe I have a CNC machine and I manufactured my own trigger parts, magazine parts, pistol grip, etc. The approved Form 1 doesn’t mean turning it into an SBR meets 922(r) compliance without doing other things to the gun first. …and in this case, it wouldn’t be compliant without removing 6 of the 922(r)-regulated, imported parts…

You are the exception to the rule I imagine, having access to a CNC machine.

I don’t have access to a CNC machine. But I *did* configure my Scorpion into a legal SBR anyway by removing the trigger pack and the magazines. So, again, the Form 1 approval is valid. The gun may not function, but it is a firearm and it is an SBR and it is 922(r) compliant. No reason to deny a Form 1, as I’ve just proven it can be assembled into an SBR and stay compliant.

In answer to your other questions:

& # 8212; the entire gun is made in the Czech Republic. If you have the factory magazines and factory trigger components, they were clearly made there. Maybe you could create enough reasonable doubt during a trial by claiming something like “sure, the magazine and trigger parts look entirely identical to the factory ones and aren’t distinguishable from them in any way, but the ATF can’t prove they really are the factory ones” but even if you win you’re still bankrupt from going to trial against the federal government. Winning or losing is a big deal, yeah, but avoiding the prosecution in the first place is hugely important also. I have kids, etc etc, and don’t feel like being the test case in a trial for a federal felony.

I don’t have an application for an SBR, but I noticed something: The factory barrel is 7.72 inches. If they were to make one with 8.28 more inches of barrel sticking out front they could put the stock on and call it a carbine. If they did I’d buy one in a heartbeat, but I guess it ain’t gonna happen.

Allowing a Scorpion into the country as a pistol but making it illegal to assemble it into a rifle even though I’m bolting on a U. S.-made stock is a stupid consequence of it though haha. But…. the ATF and the GCA of 1968 does not consider a TRUST a person. 922r says no “person” shall “assemble” a rifle with more than 10 imported parts. My TRUST is the manufacturer of the SBR and it did the assembling, therefore it is compliant with 922r during the assembly act. 922r makes the assembly act illegal not possession after the assembly has already happened. Plus I really want them to explain to a judge why one part is legal and the other part is not based on its origin. The case would be throw out in 2 seconds and that is why it will never be used in a criminal case.

We need a kit to make this into a rifle in CA.
